[It's the season for giving, and Frieda is all too happy to join in on the local traditions! As such, Jade will find a small, neatly packaged present by his door, along with a big jar of home-made cookies. Inside the little box is a Wishing Candle, along with a pack of Fortune Tea. The decorative card reads:]
Jade,
I hope you are enjoying the festivities to the fullest! In the jar are cookies I baked with my sister. They will not run out! It is a magical jar that will endlessly multiply any food you put inside (until you turn it upside down).
If you burn the candle, it will fulfil a material wish and give you back something from home. The tea will spell a fortune on the mug it is brewed in, so let us drink it together and see what is in store for us!
-Frieda
[Little does the know that she shop she got all these things at has a shady reputation... the Unlimited Cookie Jar adds raisins to everything it multiplies, the Wishing Candle may just bring Jade something he really didn't want to regain, and the Fortune Tea will disappoint them with the most basic and obvious fortunes! Alas. She tried!]
[The fact that the gifts all have unexpected side effects and tricks mates Jade find them all the more enjoyable. He gets a good laugh out of it all and already has terrible ideas on how to best use the cookies. Mushrooms with raisins in them? The perfect crime. He will enjoy the cookies for now though, his crimes against food can wait for later.]
[ Click Open the package for a special gift! There is also a basket of cookies and a note attached to it that reads:
My apologies Jade,
I tried to figure out a gift for you on short notice and thought this would make you feel less lonely. I hope you are not still feeling weird after the mistletoe incident.
[With the new year's celebrations over, it'd normally be a cold January... but not here in Ellipsa, or at least not in 3/4 of the area. As such, nothing stands in the way of Frieda and Jade as they venture to the artificial beach of Solarpeak to test out their Mermaid Necklaces!
With temperatures sweltering as usual, they need to prepare by putting on sunscreen (something new to Frieda, whose home island doesn't get too hot). Once they're ready, she nervously clutches her seashell amulet as she wades into the water in her swimsuit (she bought herself a modest cut with little sleeves and trouser legs and a small skirt attached).]
To think that we'll really be able to breathe underwater... have you turned into a merman before?
[She remembers him telling her that underwater breathing potions are more popular among humans in his homeworld, so chances are that this is the first time for both of them!]
[Jade waits until Frieda's back is turned to do his own "transformation". Unlike her, his clothes don't magically sort themselves out when he shifts back and forth. He's got to discreetly slip off his swim trunks before he takes on his true form, then uses magic to stash them away until he needs to revert.]
I have, I thought it would be best to get some experience under my belt, since I'm more familiar with swimming than you. I would be a poor teacher if I was bumbling over a sudden lack of knees.
[And he dips underwater to glide past her in a smooth motion, circling in front of her to show her his change in appearance.]
[Jade's sneaky "transformation" works out perfectly - Frieda is too preoccupied with her own, given that the transformation of her legs makes her splash into the water rather clumsily. When she resurfaces, her changes are subtle compared to Jade's, with her skin tone just a little paler than before, her swimsuit changed to a more suitable flowy top, and her scaly fish tail a silvery light blue with some purplish hues at the top and fin tips.
She gasps in amazement at the sight of him.]
It is! You're a moray!
[She remembers what moray eels look like; there's no mistaking it! How lovely is it that he was given the appearance of the ocean creature he identifies the most with?]
Your ears..! Let me look at them!
[She carefully runs a finger over one of his fin-like earshells, keeping herself afloat with strokes of her tail, then repeats the motion on her own ear - but hers remained human because that's easier, icon-wise.]
[He offers her a little help, holding out a webbed hand to support her and help her keep her balance. He was large enough that he could still use his tailfin to prop himself upright after all.]
It would seem my chosen username has made an honest merman out of me.
[...ha.]
[But he does lean forward so she can indulge in his ear fins, even giving them a little wiggle for her amusement. It was rather adorable how enthused she was over something to simple- but he wasn't really much different was he? Happily picking up and looking at common rocks and plants he found on land when he went on hikes.
All the more reason to indulge this little human, he thinks. The world on land had given him so much that enriched his life, while it may not be the sea, he could hope that this much would do the same for her.]
Are you ready to go under water? There's a few things you should know before you do.
[While the Solarpeak "sea" originally started out as an overly large pool, the accumulating sediment soon invited plant growth, and somehow - most likely through willful introduction by human hands, at least in case of the fish - the fauna followed. For what it's worth, it's a proper ecosystem worth exploring at this point!
Frieda is a bit hesitant to take her first breath underwater - she can still breathe air, so will this really work out? -, but with Jade's support, she pushes past her instincts. Initially, she almost does choke on the unfamiliar sensation, but once the function of her gills (in the same location as Jade's) kicks in, she manages to adjust. A few last air bubbles escape her mouth as she speaks.]
Incredible!
[With her eyes adjusted to a life in the water, she can see everything so clearly! There are no corals here, but there's seaweed growing in the deeper water, and small colourful fish are flitting around them. She feels the impulse to do a somersault, joyful at the new world opening up to her, but she'll first listen to her friend's further advice.]
I think my breathing is alright; the air's out of my body. What else will I need to pay attention to?
You are doing quite well so far, the other thing to be mindful of is your swim bladder. Think of it as an extra lung, you can fill it up with water to lower yourself, or empty it to lighten yourself enough to float.
[And to demonstrate, he takes a "deep breath" of water and begins to sink further. He remembered how confusing actual lungs were when he first transformed- luckily his body reacted to breathing properly on it's own, much like she seemed to.]
I should be able to pull you deeper or to the surface if you need to for now, but this will be worth trying to get some practice in.
[He lowers his back fin and turns around, gesturing for her to hold onto his shoulders. She was learning quickly, but she would need some more practical practice, and that only came from doing. The most efficient way to so that was something of a piggy-back ride.]
Here, hold onto my shoulders, and practice moving your tail while I'll bring us deeper.
[She would get to see how he swam, and practice without accidentally knocking herself off course. It would admittedly be a bit more difficult to steer himself without his back fin, but he was fairly certain he was the apex predator of this lake. Compared to his home in the dark northern depths of the Coral Sea, this was a kiddie pool.]
[She tries to imitate his use of the swim bladder, but as expected it doesn't come intuitively to her quite yet. As such, the piggyback ride is much appreciated! She's impressed at Jade's effortless speed as he pulls her along, holding on tightly with her only slightly webbed fingers while imitating his tail movements. As they pass by several sea cucumbers resting on the sandy seafloor, she points at them.]
[With the staggering amount of Moon Coins Jade earned through his participation in the missions to slay the 'all-consuming darkness' and capture its creator, the mysterious Doctor, he was able to make the down payment for a little beach house in Solarpeak. Since he recently told Frieda how vitally important it is for merfolk to be near water in case their human transformation fails, she isn't all that surprised at his fast move anymore.
When she arrives at the address he sent her, it turns out to be in a remote bend of the artificial sea. Naturally, most of the waterfront is prime real estate among the sun-loving population, but there are some spots where there's hardly any sandy beach at all, and this is one of them. The outcropping of shore on the far side of the sea, away from the lively promenade walk with its shops and ice cream stalls, provides just enough space for the one small house which juts out into the water, partly standing on stilts. Frieda is hardly shocked to see her friend swimming in merman form as she steps onto his veranda with a basket on her arm.]
I see you're happy with your new home. Don't you regret moving so far away from me?
[He constantly teases and trolls her; he can stand a little bit from her in return!]
[After a long, busy day of moving and getting settled, it was hard to resist the cold allure of the water. More so as the sun has started to set- as he has mentioned before, fish grew more active in the dark. It was also a nice perk that his true form couldn’t sweat, he still found the sensation unsettling and yet had been suffering the leaking bodily fluids all day- had it been cooler he’d probably have enjoyed fishing with a rod instead.
So with his clothes neatly folded on the end of the dock that extended from his house, he’d slipped into the water and returned to his natural state to hunt. He darted around the lake at full speed- unlike Azul, he and his brother were fast enough that they easily outpaced those flying on brooms, so it made his hunt quick and efficient… and a much needed opportunity to let loose after being cooped up inside with his injury.
He had just returned to deposit his catch in a bucket he’d set up near his clothes when he heard the voice- a good thing too because he was just about to indulge in a snack, which he quickly returned to the bucket, before smiling innocently with his chin in his hands. She wasn’t ready to watch him demolish a live fish in one gulp yet. No human was.]
You wound me! And here I was ready with a spare set of keys for you and Historia.
[And with that he picked a pair of keys out of the pile of clothes and jingled them before tossing them her way. Of course he had some for his classmates as well. He rather likes privacy, given the isolation of his house, but he was being mindful of potential emergencies.
Besides, he’d made certain to have a room with a lock specifically for his crimes work that none would be able to enter. So the occasional surprise visitors would be no big deal.]
[Frieda registers the clothing bundle without letting her eyes rest on it. Mermaid Necklaces transform the wearer's outfit along with their body, and yet...
Jade immediately having the pair of keys for her and her sister at hand, though, brightens her smile as she catches them - not that she'll go any easier on him because of this!]
That's the least you can do for making me commute out here every day!
[She puts the keys in her skirt pocket and approaches him to offer a hand - sure, he can probably jump up onto the dock with easy, but it's the nice thing to do!]
You didn’t think I’d have a room ready for you two? I’m insulted!
[He says in a playfully feigned hurt tone- while still accepted the offered hand of course. It was true that getting his top half in the deck with ease, his tail however proved to be a bigger struggle, though one he was used to. It required that he lay on his stomach while he slithered his tail onto the dock.
That is until the sheer weight of it began to cause the dock to sink. As light and graceful as he was in water, on land his tail was little more than dead weight, so he abandons the center and lets half of it slip back in. The mermaid necklace did require one to be in the water in some capacity after all- might as well keep up the facade in that way as well.
Still there was enough of the bulk to lean back against like a comfy couch.]
I do hope you’ll forgive how sparse they are currently though. Getting everything set up was quite an effort, so I only focused on necessities.
[Frieda laughs at the banter, struggling to pull Jade on land, only to give up the effort along with him. She can't help but glance over his body as he rests on the dock, with the golden rays of the setting sun reflecting in the water running off his skin.]
You should have told me that you'd be moving today! I'd have helped you!
[Instead - out of gentlemanly politeness, she can only assume, to spare her the physical work - he merely told her that he'd be busy for most of the day and suggested they meet for dinner, sending his new address as a surprise just a few hours ago.
Seeing him lie there so serenely, she supposes she can go easy on him and let him have some privacy... without saying that out loud, of course. She's come to find that he likes leaving things unspoken. As such, she lifts her basket up.]
How about I go ahead and set up our dinner? Since you said you'd get us fish I made a salad, but it still needs to be dressed.
[Usually, she has dinner with Historia every evening, but given that she had advance notice of Jade's schedule today, she swapped things around a little (and it's not like Historia takes those things half as serious as she does, anyway).]
I hardly wanted to trouble you with such a dull task.
[Up until the sweating , he could have done without that. But that’s neither here nor there.
Not mentioning he technically didn’t need much in the way of help, nor did he want to be flaunting his physical strength just yet. The more he kept a secret, the better it turned it for him.]
Of course. The kitchen is fully stocked- save for the fish of course. I’ll bring those in shortly.
[When he catches her gaze linger on him, he mistakes takes out as looking behind him- he’d been rather entranced at the view earlier. Now with the stars starting to show themselves he found it even more enthralling. They were a rare thing to see growing up, but he was quite fond of just gazing upon them.]
[She lifts her eyes to the view beyond her friend... and he's right. It's dark where they are, so the stars seem to shine all the more brightly above the sunset, and the far shore, more densely settled, is full of warm distant lights too.]
It is.
[And he's part of that nice view - but far be it from her to feed his ego by saying that out loud!]
With how warm it still is, we could have dinner out here, assuming you have some portable lamps or candles... or can you make lights that stay in place with your magic?
[In hindsight, she regrets not asking the fairies for light magic when they gave her her tattoo. She really wanted the Mermaid Song ability, but why did she choose retrocognition? Sure, it's an advantageous skill that she's already familiar with, but wouldn't it have been nicer and equally valuable to share the light-making ability with Jade?]
[Finally, it's Jade's turn to turn 19 too! Knowing that it'll be hard for him to celebrate his birthday without his twin, Frieda meticulously planned a day of distractions: They'll get up bright and early and go for a hike in an area of his choosing, and she'll bring along all the presents she collected for him over the course of the year in her Hammerspace Purse to gift him during their picnic break.
However, when she gets up in the morning, she finds that plan immediately sidetracked in the form of an eel merchild in her home. With no other eel people around to her best knowledge, it isn't hard to put two and two together, but if there were any doubt about the little boy's identity, the mismatched eyes - one bright and one dull - would have removed any illusions.]
Jade?! What happened to you?
[Her eyes wander over to her potion set... that's right, she made him a potion to cure the stomach ache he got last evening, but it had to slow-cook overnight! Did she make a mistake? She hurriedly rummages through the ingredients she used - and sure enough, rather than the soothing menthol, the Potion of Time bottle is empty.]
[So there he is, lost in a pile of his older self's clothes. Lost, dazed, out of water, and very very confused.
His golden eye was clear to see as he peered out from the neck of his shirt. He was perfectly quiet and still. Unsettlingly so. There was no outward sign of panic or fear, just very pointed observation.
Of course, he WAS fearful. He was out of water. He didn't know where he was. He didn't know where Floyd was. There was just some human that found him. But thrashing and panicking would only tire him out, he was young, but he was able to keep calm enough to think logically... for now. And that ment watching.]
[She… knew his name. That was strange. Why would a human know his name?
Still, now she was closer to him and he disliked that. She was pretty big and he didn’t know if he could take her in a fight while out of water. So it was time to be SCARY! Or try to. He thinks he has a shot at least.
So she’ll probably recognize the warning clicking sound, much like the one he used back when he was bullying that One Siren In Particular, and it was accompanied by a rumbling growl.
Of course, being young, the clicking sound wasn’t the low reverberating pop from before, no. Now it more closely resembled someone popping bubblewrap, and his growl was no deeper than a cats. His lip does start to curl up slightly, just starting to show teeth- but only just. Those are his secret weapon for getting out of this! Or so he thought.]
[Hearing those clicks and growls at a much less menacing volume than usual made Frieda think of a kitten practising its hiss, and she couldn't suppress a smile. How cute!! Giving him a little more space, she sat back, hands relaxed in front of her where he could see them.]
Don't be scared. I'm not going to hurt you! Do you want to go into the water?
[She pointed at their waterfront veranda from where they so often jumped right into the artificial sea. Part of her was concerned that he'd swim right off, but at his current size, she might be able to keep up with him, and he might feel more at ease in his element. With no memories, he had to assume that she caught him!]
[Jade only briefly looks in the direction she pointed, but didn't completely take his eyes off her.
He DID want to go back to the water, and absolutely did plan to torpedo off the second he hit water, but also he still didn't trust her. If she brought him here then why would she throw him back? There had to be something of a catch...
So he continues his little warning sound- but mixed in there might be the faint rumblings of a hungry belly. Hostile he may be but there was a sure fire way to get on his good side.]
[Jade was supposed to receive several presents for his birthday - all things Frieda bought for him over the course of the year -, but given that it went somewhat haywire, he instead receives them for the anniversary of their first meeting during the Yuletide season:
Best Sleep (blanket large enough for two that keeps the temperature perfect for sleeping)
Book of Foraging (magical book that can be used to store things while foraging - if the name is known, the book will automatically put them in an alphabetical order and store the information afterwards)
Magical Garden (chest that acts as a dimensional garden space - any plant stored inside will remain intact with ideal conditions for growth)
Mushroom Cap (cap that looks like a mushroom and lets the user pass monsters without notice as they will think the person is a poisonous mushroom - Frieda has one too!)
Treasure Glasses (glasses that let one see rare items, such as flowers that are normally harder to find from among the foliage or rare gems among normal stones, more easily)
Besides, she invites him out for dinner to a fancy restaurant's Yuletide special.]

Jade, please talk to me! I put the wrong ingredient in our potion; I'm so sorry! Are you alright?
...
Do you know who I am?
Let’s try this again without everything in my life breaking
